SEO #2: What Exactly is Search Engine Optimization?
i. What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Very briefly, Search Engine Optimization is basically a strategy where you take popular keywords and put them into the body of your story, website or blog to help it reach to the top of a search engine.
SEO is an important aspect of marketing on the Internet. Whether you are a website looking to drive broad, general traffic or one seeking specific, high-quality, targeted traffic, applying SEO strategies may help the cause. For a business, it means bringing your web presence to people seeking to purchase your products – or something like yours. Ultimately, at its roots, SEO is about search result placements – knowing how to play Google’s rules and how to best leverage certain keywords, niche markets and analysis tools to boost your site’s stature on the web.
Similar to a publisher which has copyeditors who separate quality from trash, search engines use an ‘aggregator’ that goes through headlines and automatically group together keywords and subjects on the pages. This poses a particular structure, that traffic would lead to more readership – for example, the great writer who only gets 100 hits vs. the average writer who, knowing SEO, gets 1000 hits.
Note: Traffic alone cannot convert surfers to customers – high quality content is a necessary compliment. Additionally, you want to achieve a high content-to-code ratio.
